What is the difference between Office 2019 and Office 365?
Customers can now purchase Microsoft Office 2019 for Windows and Mac. Office 2019 is the next perpetual release of Office. It includes significant improvements over Microsoft Office 2016 and earlier versions of on-premises Office.
Microsoft Office 2019
Microsoft has officially released Office 2019 for Windows and Mac. The new versions of the word processor and presentation tool include features that were previously available in Office 365. The office package including the big four: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Access, Project, Publisher and Visio programs are also available.
The applications have new features, such as a dark mode, speech recognition and a function that reads text aloud. In Excel it is also possible to create timelines and Outlook now has the Focused Inbox, in which only important messages are shown, and support for mentions.
The product is geared towards volume-licensed commercial customers.
It will be the latest version of the Office 20xx family. Office 2019 applications don’t receive feature updates but do receive regular security and stability updates.
Office 2019 versus Office 365
In recent years, Microsoft has focused mainly on Office 365, the online version of the office suite. Yet the company still wants to offer Office to companies that are “not ready for the step to the cloud”.
Office 2019 offers the same functionality as Office 365 except for:
- Creativity: Editor in Word, Tap in Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook, Designer in PowerPoint, Researcher in Word, Ideas in Excel, Data Types in Excel.
- Teamwork: Real time collaboration across Word (only with SPS online), Excel, and PowerPoint, @-mentions in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Integration: Language packs included, FastTrack Options, Intune Integration.
- Intelligent security: ATP in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive for Business1, Office 365 Message Encryption, Office Enterprise Protection, Add sensitivity label in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Activation of Office 2019 for enterprise licensing
The activation methods for Office 2019 are the same as they were for Office 2016: If you use KMS keys, then you have to set up a 2019 KMS Host to activate against. If you use MAK keys, then you can either activate over the Internet (recommended).
